What Is Money?

Money is a tool. It helps us buy things we need and want without having to trade items.

Imagine if you wanted a toy and had to trade three sandwiches and a bike for it. That would be hard! Money makes trading simple

Money is Used for Buying Things

You can use money to buy:

  • Food
  • Clothes
  • Toys
  • Games
  • Books
  • and when you are older Cars and houses

What is Saving?

What if I want something and don't have enough money?

Sometimes you don't spend your money right away.

If a bicycle costs $100 and you only have $20, you can save your money until you have enough. This is called Saving.

Think of saving like: A squirrel storing nuts for winter.

What else can I do with Money?

Money can be used to help others.

  • Giving to a charity
  • Helping an animal shelter
  • Buying a gift for someone

EARN - SAVE - GROW

WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY MONEY?

EARN

Money starts with earning.

You earn money by helping others, working, or selling something people want.

Kids can earn money by:

  • Doing extra chores
  • Helping neighbors
  • Running a lemonade stand
  • Walking dogs
  • Selling crafts

Kid Tip: Every dollar starts with effort.

SAVE

Saving means keeping some of your money for later.

Instead of spending all your money today, you set some aside for future goals.

Examples:

  • New bicycle
  • Video game
  • Special toy
  • School trip

Kid Tip: Small savings can become big rewards.

GROW

Growing money means making your money work for you.

When you put money in a savings account at a credit union, they pay you a little extra money called interest.

Example:

  • You save $100.
  • The credit union pays you a little interest.
  • After a while, you have more than $100.

It's like planting a seed:

The longer you leave it, the more it can grow.

Kid Tip: Money likes time. The longer it stays saved, the bigger it can become.

Earn It

"I worked for it."

Save It

"I keep some for later."

Grow It

"My money earns more money."

Where and how can I save money?

At Home

If you have a small amount of money you can start at home.

  • Piggy bank
  • Coin jar
  • Treasure box
  • Savings envelope

At SEAFCU

If you have a larger amount of money, you can open a Savings account.

  • Your Parent or Guardian will need to help you open a Savings account.

With a savings account your money will make a little bit more money every few months.
